For years people, have been exploring life off the highway to see what lies over the next hill. To do that, people began to look for vehicles that could handle off-roading. Military-grade vehicles were known to take on the challenges that came with off off-road travel, but regular buyers wanted vehicles on the market to go off-road. Manufacturers began developing models that could handle that kind of rugged demand. SUVs are one of the answers to the idea of traveling off-road. Overlanding, as it is sometimes called, is the idea of self-reliant travel off-road to destinations well off the beaten path where the goal is the off-road trip itself. Once the right place is found, many overlanders use the opportunity to camp out in their vehicles.
There are a few travelers that embrace this nomadic life as a complete stripped-down way of living. An example of people who do this is Matt Hummel, who is known to overland in a vintage 1956 Porsche 356, a vehicle designed for off-road rally racing. Another example is a 24-year-old Navy Veteran named Harrison Schoen who lives life out of his 2008 Porsche Cayenne, which he modified with the purpose of living life off the beaten path.
Porsche Models for Overlanding
Although Porsche is historically known mostly for sportscars, they have a couple of SUVs on the market that can take on the challenges of overlanding. A compact SUV called the Macan is described as an SUV with Sportscar character. This SUV is equipped with Porsche’s Doppelkupplung 7-speed transmission and a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine that kicks out 261 hp with 295 lb.-ft. of torque with a track speed of 144 mph. This SUV is small but mighty with room for 5 people and with Porsche’s Active suspension management, Porsche’s Torque Vectoring Plus, and Porsche’s Traction Management, and with Porsche’s Off-road mode, the Macan would be a good choice for your overlanding trips.
Porsche’s Cayenne is a little larger SUV that is equipped with a 3.0L turbocharged V-6 engine that can put out 335 HP with 332 to 629 lb.-ft. of torque, depending on the configuration you go with. The Turbo GT is likely the most powerful configuration, even offering up to 7,700 lbs. for its towing capacity with the right package. The transmission is an eight-speed Tiptronic S, but it is also equipped with the Porsche’s performance systems like the 4D Chassis Control, Adaptive air suspension, Active Suspension Management, and Dynamic Chassis Control.
