History of the Porsche Taycan EV
History of the Porsche Taycan EV
The Porsche Taycan represented a first for the brand, entering a new world of electric vehicles. The very first Taycan debuted in 2019 and went to market in 2020, but the history of the Taycan stretches back to 2015, when the Porsche Mission E design was revealed in 2015. From that drawing board, Porsche worked tirelessly for the next four years to design an all-electric, four-door sport sedan that offered enough practicality for daily driving and ensured it delivered the performance you expect from a Porsche. Today’s Porsche Taycan looks a little different than the Mission E prototype 10 years ago. Still, through every production cycle, Porsche has continued to innovate, adding new trim levels, features, and power. The Taycan is one of the fastest cars in the world, eclipsing competition from names like Lamborghini, Ferrari and other EV players like Tesla. It recently set a record-setting lap at Laguna Seca, beating the Tesla Model S Plaid by three seconds. More impressively? The Taycan was unmodified and in production tires. First Generation Porsche Taycan
The 2020 Porsche Taycan was the first shot Porsche took at EVs, and it impressed immediately. The first-gen Taycan featured AWD across the lineup, with an electric motor strapped to each axle to send power to all four wheels. Several trim levels were available, with output ranging from 522-750 horsepower. The Taycan was quicker than the rest from the jump, getting from 0 to 60 in as little as 2.4 seconds. Where the Taycan prioritized performance and driving thrills, it lacked in driving range. Models sat just around 200 miles of range, well behind competition from other EV manufacturers. Despite this, the 2020 Taycan offered a luxury driving experience few cars could match, with a wealth of technology, premium materials, and effortless style. The first-generation Taycan was a strong first step for Porsche, who continued to hone the Taycan into a better EV.

2021-2023 Porsche Taycan
The 2021 Porsche Taycan sought to address some concerns with the first-gen model, adding a new battery option while making the Taycan more affordable courtesy of a rear-wheel drive base model equipped with a single motor. Porsche also recalibrated the charging system to make it more efficient. With the larger battery, the Taycan’s range increased by about 10%. The 2022 Porsche Taycan added a new GTS trim level, offering a finely tuned chassis and powertrain to maximize driver enjoyment. 2022 also saw the addition of plenty of new technology, including Android Auto, remote park from your smartphone, and a personal paint color selector. Perhaps the most significant change came in 2023 when Porsche updated the battery system and charging infrastructure to increase range and charging speed. The 2023 Porsche Taycan’s max range jumped to 246 miles, helping it compete with the rest of the segment.
2024-Present Taycan
The 2024 Porsche Taycan went into production without many changes worth noting, but the 2025 Porsche Taycan received a style refresh, with changes to the front bumper, headlamps, tail lights, fenders, and sheet metal. The Taycan’s charging infrastructure also improved, enabling you to charge from 8 to 80% in 17 minutes. Porsche also upgraded the batteries, making the previously optional 83.6-kWh battery standard and a larger 97.0-kWh battery optional. Ironically, the larger battery is also lighter, helping models reach closer to 300 miles of driving range, a massive step up from previous models. Porsche also added the Taycan Turbo GT to the lineup, offering up to 1,019 horsepower, 340 miles of driving range and coming at a hefty cost. The Taycan’s lineup has changed over the years, but now it encompasses an entry-level model with a single engine that can top 300 miles of driving range and a high-performance model that puts McLaren and Bugatti to shame.
